Golden Beaches of Olhao, The Algarve

Olhão is the perfect base from which to explore the magnificent Formosa Lagoon Natural Park and the idyllic beaches on its barrier islands. Armona, Culatra and Farol beaches are all accessible by regular ferries taking less than 15 minutes. If you wish to explore the equally beautiful beaches on the slightly more distant Cabanas, Tavira and Barreta Islands, you can rent a water taxi or join a boat excursion there. Whichever way you do it, the trip in itself is already worth it, passing through the natural beauty of the protected wetlands of the Formosa Lagoon, which harbours a unique collection of fauna and flora and spectacular scenery.

You’ll feel as if you’ve stepped onto a paradise island when you disembark. There is no motorised transport and on most of the beaches there is little development apart from that required to service the beach activities, which include a wide range of non-motorised water sports. The rare settlements, as on Culatra Island, where the fishing community is still active, are charming, and the fishing means that the fish and seafood in the restaurants were most probably caught within sight of where you’ll eat it. Be sure to try the traditional dishes such as the razor clams and caldeirada stews combining a range of fish and seafood.

If you wish to be completely independent and enjoy a dream picnic on a perfect beach, accompanied by only the soft lapping of the calm sea, the Real Marina will be pleased to pack a hamper.

Crystal clear, shallow, calm, warm water, blue skies and a bright sun shining on golden sand. Come and explore some of the best beaches Europe has to offer on the barrier islands of the Formosa Lagoon, the Algarve’s well kept secret.
